falling in love

Category: Photography

Over the last few years, I have found a true desire to delve into photography.  I have always found photography to be magical, but it was always too complicated, and playing in the darkroom wasn’t that exciting for me—I hated the smell of the chemicals. Now that that part of the equation has been eliminated, I am more and more interested.  I made a big investment in a top end camera at the end of last year, and it came a couple weeks ago.  The Nikon D700 is a wonderful camera with a ton of bells and whistles, and most important to me, the ability to shoot tethered to a computer. Having spent many hours in the Future photo studios watching them shoot tethered, and the ability it gives to truly examine the image in full screen, I fell in love.  I tried several set ups to get my pentax to work tethered, and they didn’t really do it for me.  The Nikon is a dream set up.  Last night I finally got the whole setup working smoothly.  Just in time for a photo shoot for PlayStation: The Official Magazine.

It was really nice to be able to have everything set up within 15 minutes.  Now that I am using my laptop as part of the process, Dan helped me find this great rack stand—which has locking wheels—so I can keep the laptop near me, but it swivels easy to show images to the clients or the talent. It worked great for the PTOM shoot, that will appear in the May issue.  I am really feeling more confident about what I am doing, and it helps more with each shoot.

I've got a similar story with photography. I took photography for my major (Graphic Design), so I had a 101 and 102 class using B&W film about 12 years ago now. Like the photo part OK, but the dark room was way too much work. In the digital age I started dabbling with point and shoots for a few years and finally sold my Canon Pro1 and got a Canon 40D DSLR (which is still what I have) about a year or two ago. (and have been buying lenses, accessories, etc. ever sense LOL)
I just shoot for fun mostly though. Some times I get to shoot something for work though.

    I <3 Veronica.

SO are those strobes or "hot lights" you're using?

In these photos they are "cool lights", which are basically daylight balanced florescent lights. They are great for models cause they don't make them wilt and sweat in the heat. I have actually gotten a couple of Alien Bee strobes since these were taken and I like them alot, but these are still nice to have, and great for video work.

Cool. I'd probably end up with some ABees if I was that into it. I shoot mostly outdoors, but have a couple speedlites. (Canon side). So I'm some what of a "strobist" when it comes to lighting. I've been looking at the large compact florescents with stands though. (photography is quite addicting) I want to keep expanding what/how I can shoot.

Photography IS addicting, and so is getting gear. I have some speedlights too, and I have to say that they can be pretty powerful, and much more portable. Although the Alien Bees are much better than other lights I have seen.
